Rail Yard Talks: The U.S. Civil War: The First Railroad War

Rail Yard Talks:
The U.S. Civil War: The First Railroad War

Join us for another of our Rail Yard Talks Series. As part of our educational programs, Rail Yard Talks focus on a lifelong learning theme.

The U.S. Civil War was the first conflict in which trains made a significant difference. In fact, military observers from European countries came to America to observe the battles and use of rail. The difference was the rapid transport on land of soldiers, horses, and some supplies.

Trains permitted the many battles to be fought in so many places. Every major battle was fought within five miles of a railroad junction! In fact, the last days of the Civil War were fought in trenches (as in World War I). The surrender was caused by the Union capturing Confederate supply trains. The Iron Horse now replaced the one of hoof and saddle.
