The Railroad Museum would like to take this time to present a unique and special opportunity to all of those who would like to help and support the museum as it continues to grow and develop.
Several sections of historic rail have been decommissioned and preserved from the museum’s complex, where the Milwaukee Road locomotive maintenance and railcar repair facility in Sioux City, Iowa once was. These sections of rail are now available for purchase.
The rails have a Milwaukee Railroad Shops domed logo on them to display and signify their origin, and with the purchase of a rail a small card that will certify the rail’s authenticity as well as explain the historical significance of the artifact will be included.
The full length rails in which these sections originated from were made by the Illinois Steel Company from 1897 to 1903. Until the 1940’s, over 30 steam locomotives rolled over these rails everyday, and once the steam era had passed many diesel locomotives ran up and down these rails until the complex closed in 1981.
These rails have survived for over 100 years, and create a link back to an important part of our nation’s history. The railroads and the people that worked for them, helped drive and shape the country into what it is today.
For that reason, the museum has created these souvenirs so that those who are interested, can own a rare piece of history, as well as financially support the ongoing efforts of the museum to preserve that history.
