Rail Yard Talks: The U.S. Civil War: The First Railroad War

Rail Yard Talks:
The U.S. Civil War: The First Railroad War

Join us for another of our Rail Yard Talks Series. As part of our educational programs, Rail Yard Talks focus on a lifelong learning theme.

The U.S. Civil War was the first conflict in which trains made a significant difference. In fact, military observers from European countries came to America to observe the battles and use of rail. The difference was the rapid transport on land of soldiers, horses, and some supplies.

Trains permitted the many battles to be fought in so many places. Every major battle was fought within five miles of a railroad junction! In fact, the last days of the Civil War were fought in trenches (as in World War I). The surrender was caused by the Union capturing Confederate supply trains. The Iron Horse now replaced the one of hoof and saddle.

Reading by the Rails

This month’s theme: Ghost Train!

At Sioux City Railroad Museum, we believe that the ability to read greatly improves lives. Our goal is to help children retain and enhance their reading skills.

In this fun monthly reading program, we will use railroad theme books to foster a love of reading.

At the end of each program, children have the opportunity to participate in a creative activity that relates to the theme of that month.

Be An Engineer Day

The Railroad Museum in Sioux City is offering a Be An Engineer Program that can not only provide you with a ride in the cab of our 1943 General Electric 45 ton switcher locomotive, but it could land you in the engineer’s seat with you actually operating the locomotive yourself. This is a rare opportunity for rail fans and visitors alike to actually drive a diesel locomotive.

During each 2 hour-long session the participants will be given 1 hour of basic instruction by our trained engineers while learning how it works. Then, it’s time to climb into the engineer’s seat and take the locomotive for a spin for another hour while your instructor watches over your shoulder ensuring safety and proper operation are always adhered to.

Up to four people may share each of the hour-long time slots. In order to operate the locomotive you must be 18 years old or older, however, any people younger may ride along with an adult.

The cost of this unique experience is $50 per engineer and $10 per passenger. This cost will help cover fuel and train crew costs.

Reservations are required in advance and are on a first come first serve basis. The locomotive will continue to operate unless severe weather approaches.

Please contact the Railroad Museum, Sioux City at (712) 233-6996 to make your reservation or for answers to any additional questions that you may have.

The Orphan Train

Join us as New Stage Players presents a unique production of THE ORPHAN TRAIN, hosted by the Sioux City Railroad Museum.

Between 1854 and 1929 more than 200,000 orphaned, homeless and abandoned children were relocated by train to the Midwest. THE ORPHAN TRAIN is their story.

Hear the lonesome whistle of the train wail in the unique setting of the Sioux City Railroad Museum as we follow the tales of seven orphans hoping to find a home – if not in this town, then, perhaps the next..

The museum will be open extended hours (4:30pm – 8:30pm) for the performances, which will take place at 5pm and 7pm Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th. General admission tickets are $10 and include admission to the museum and will be available exclusively at the door.

Performances:

Saturday, 9/8 5pm & 7pm
Sunday, 9/9 5pm & 7pm.
